Fabulously Frugal Friday---All Natural Orange Vinegar Cleaner For a Happy House

Welcome back to Fabulously Frugal Friday!

This week I decided to share one of the simplest, and yet powerful cleaners that anyone can make frugally for their own home cleaning.

With three children, we eat a lot of snacks, and a few years ago, I decided to make one of our daily snack times a fruit or veggie snack rather than always having baked goods, or carbs. A LOT of fruit peels later, and in a rather frugal moment, I came across an article on making your own cleaners, and how effective and powerful they can actually be.
As I have said before in many other posts, once you begin to make things for yourself, and see the cost is only pennies compared to what you would normally spend...
When you realize it is healthier for your family to clean in a natural way rather than using tons of chemicals, sprays, or harsh products that get breathed in...
Well, you end up like me, unable to buy anything in the store without feeling guilty because you KNOW you can make it at home for much cheaper.

All that being said, however, this cleaner is so simple your 12 year old can do it.
Mine does.

You want to start with the peels of about 3-4 oranges, and pack them into a wide mouth quart jar, empty and clean mayo jar, whatever you have available that you can put a lid on. As you can see from the picture below, the jar on the left is packed full up to the bottom thread on the jar. You then take white vinegar, and fill, slowly, until you reach the top thread of the jar, cap it, and place it somewhere for two weeks.

I place mine in the kitchen cupboard near the dishes because I will see it, and remember it needs to be shaken every day. Make sure you have a tight-fitting lid. Below you can see I used an old peanut butter lid on a regular mouth jar. It was not as good as a fit as my regular lids and rings were, leaking occasionally when shaken, so I wont be doing that again.

Shake every day for two weeks, and don't worry if your vinegar level falls below the peels over the time lapse. They will absorb some of the liquid before you are done.

This is the final product. I purchased a very inexpensive spray bottle at Kmart, for around $1.00. I made sure to mark it. When the jar is strained out, you will have around 1 1/2 to 2 cups of orange vinegar to pour into the spray bottle. Straining it from a regular mouth jar is a little more work, which is why I prefer the wide mouth jars, but seriously, use what you have available. It should fill the spray bottle around halfway, and then you fill the remainder with water. The color will look like this (sorry folks, mine is half used up--which is why I have another container going):

When freshly started, mine is filled all the way up to the large part on the neck, about 1" from the top ring.
Now you may be asking---WHY would I do this? Why would I use a combination of orange peels, that I would normally throw away, and something as simple as vinegar to make something that is supposed to clean my house. Don't I need something stronger to actually CLEAN the house? You now, like something I buy in the store? Will it hurt my furniture? Floors? Does it actually do the job?

Well, dear readers, let me tell you a few facts about vinegar you may not already know.
  • First of all, your grandmother, and my grandmother knew the cleaning properties of vinegar. That was why so many of them had crocks on their counters where they were always making their own. (Yes that IS possible, and later this fall I will show you how, I promise.) Vinegar can kill up to 99.8 % of all known bacteria.....which is just as good as bleach. And I assume you don't clean your entire house in bleach, right?
  • How can you get any stronger than something that cleans as well as bleach? One of the best parts about this simple cleaner is that after a short time the vinegar smell dissipates, leaving only the scent of the citrus hanging in the air. Oh, and before you ask, YES, if you like the smell of grapefruit, lemons, or limes better than oranges, then please, by all means use those instead. However, remember that part of making this is the frugal part, so don't go making this product as expensive as what you would buy in the store by buying a bunch of fruit you wont eat just for a different smell. :)
  • Let me tell you all the parts of my house I use this on: every part. It cleans windows. It cleans floors. Counter tops, cupboards, doorknobs, bannisters, sinks, cutting boards, even in the dishwater with glass jars. We spray down the trash can with it between bag changes to kill any bacteria that might be lingering. And best of all, this all natural cleaner will never hurt my kids, cause asthma, or skin reactions, unless someone decides someday to bathe in it, which just might end up a possibility if you don't know my kids.
  • When I use it to clean the bathroom, I always use my other bottle of Orange Vinegar that has 1 tsp of tea tree oil added to it for that extra boost of cleanliness. I could (and have) used very strong thyme tea added for the same purpose (1/2 cup worth), but like the smell of the tea tree oil much more. And since a bathroom is supposed to smell clean and welcoming, I would rather go with a smell I really like.
So what do you have to lose? Do you like the smell of a certain herb? I have also made lavender vinegar for cleaning certain things, or even added in sprigs of rosemary to my orange vinegar for a change once in a while.
As I always say, once you start thinking outside the box, the sky is the limit. :)

Let me know when you plan on trying it, or ask questions and I will do my best to get back to you soon.

***** UPDATE: I have now been  making this cleaner for almost a year, and have tweaked it a bit to include different scents and abilities to tackle the worst items and areas in your home.
1. I have made it with grapefruit peels and rosemary leaves, and very much enjoyed the scent change. If you want the citrus smell to be even stronger, you can use essential oils. I dont find it that much of a difference though, and certainly more expensive, so I still do it my way. :)

2. I changed the formula in the bathroom to using lemon and lime peels, with thyme leaves and tea tree oil for that added boost of bacteria killing. Thyme and tea tree are both major germ killers, so I feel this cleaner packs more of a punch that just the all purpose orange vinegar.

3. It was pointed out to me that in some cases, and depending on the acidity of your vinegar (NO LESS than 5% acidity should be used in these recipes), it can actually encourage different types of bacteria growth, such as Ecoli. from raw meats. SO please, do not use this on your cutting boards to sanitize. Some good old fashioned elbow grease, and boiling water will do the trick just as well. However, in all other instances, we do not need the commercial cleaners, which do more problem-causing than they help. With a good cleaning schedule, and a dedicated worker that is equipped with these cleaners, you can achieve a clean, and safe home, even with children around.

Many blessings to you and yours,
Heather

May I Never Forget to be Thankful....

I cant stop looking at picture of the wildfires burning in Colorado.

You see, I grew up there.

not my pic, if I could find source, I would post it...sorry...

High in the mountains, in a little bitty town that once was a big rip-roaring town that breathed Gold dust, and Silver strikes, saloons, and wood board walks, panning for gold....
A town that had streets familiar with feet such as Molly Brown, Billy the Kid, and a hundred thousand hungry, dirty men desperate for financial gain from the solid, indomitable rocks around them.

I grew up thinking all of that was normal, and everyone else had the same things, the same celebrations, the same type of history all around them.
I knew what it was to pan for gold, to drink a true sasparilla soda, to try to haul something using a mule, or ride in a stagecoach, because each year my itty bitty town had a celebration that honored this heritage.
My brother had a teacher in 5th grade that was honored as one of the "true" mountain men of his generation, and he taught his class how to set traps, eat squirrel, and live in an igloo they built with their own hands.

Yep. That was what my childhood was like.

And now, as I see 36,000 people being evacuated.

source

As I see the Air Force Academy evacuated, a place of great pride
(and many jobs) to the people of Colorado...
As I see homes burning to the ground....

source

And animals dying because their owners cant get them out in time because the fire is moving so fast...
When I hear that the Flying W Ranch, a historic landmark I grew up knowing and loving is completely gone...

I am telling  you, it breaks my heart.

We grew up knowing all about wildfires, how dangerous and deadly they can be. How they can turn in a moment and capture the firefighters in between lines of fire, trapping them... killing them. How a single gust of wind can turn a smolder into a raging monster that jumps fire walls and ridges of bare rock hundreds of feet apart. We knew never to start a fire without permission, and to make good and sure it was really put out when we were done camping, or picnicking.

As I look around me at the green grass, and clear air, the water in the kiddie pool, and the garden thriving in the sun, all my troubles seem so incredibly insignificant in comparison to what I know is happening right now to people I love, and a state I hold dear to my heart.  I can only pray...and pray...and pray.

Would you join with me in praying for Colorado?
Pray for the people who have lost everything, or the ones who are sitting, right now in a shelter, in anguish,
wondering about the unknown.
Pray for the firefighters who are fearlessly rushing into the fray just as the firefighters did on 9/11, heedless of their own safety, intent on only saving who and what they could.
They are truly on the front line of an enormous battle.
Pray for the owners of the ranches, and farms, who are powerless to stop the loss of their crops, and their livestock, for how can one or two people control a thousand animals? Or save a field of dry grain?
It makes me stop and think,
search my heart, ask for wisdom to absorb it all.

Why does this strike me so hard as prophetic of what we will see coming in the future of our country? For the first time ever on the history of this great and noble nation, as homes are burning in subdivisions in Colorado Springs, our Congress has moved forward to hold our Attorney General Eric Holder in contempt for not providing information on "a sting gone bad" that has cut our nation to its core, taken a true patriot away from his family, and left us wondering what else we are in the dark about.

Pray for our nation.

Pray that the giant raging wildfires beneath the surface of our government, our leadership, our economy, can and will pull us together rather than apart. Pray that the fires can be put out, and just refine out the impurities, not create devastation within.
And I pray: Lord, let me never forget to be thankful for the things I have that are imperishable---
Your love, my family, the hope I have in You.
May we never forget to focus on those things, and in true humility, step forward to do what we can to those who need our help.

Many Blessings to you and yours,
Heather

Almost Wordless Wednesday---Goodbye to June--*sniff sniff*

Its SO sad.
June has flown by on the speedy wings of summer.

I have been so busy living life, that I had to intentionally make time to stop and see the beauty all around me as summer races on.

Have you ever had a month where it seems like no matter how hard you try time just seems to fly past you faster than you can keep up? Perhaps it is because I was down with the pneumonia or something, but I am a little sad that this is the last Wednesday in June, and next Wednesday will be in July already.
   How has your June gone?

Here are some of my favorite pictures from the last week of June here at the Welcoming House........

making cookies from the Cookie Master Mix

its more fun to play with the box than what comes in it, right?

the first blossoms on my acorn squash plant is always something to smile about!

Cherry tomatoes coming SOON! :)

Lemon Balm growing fast--one of my seed starts that I am proud of!

What to do with old lids that cant be reused? Make a wind chime to keep away the birds...

next year, we will have Rhubarb!

Cherokee Tears (black beans) are starting to send out climbing vines---love this heirloom!

Sunflowers reaching for the sky...one of my favorite flowers...

had to post this---my Handy Hubby made fajitas for my birthday dinner...

and certain small children (and BIG ones) are pretty excited about a party for Mommy!

Kids Fun Ideas---A Pin-tastic Pinterest Tuesday!

   Welcome back, Dear readers!

AS I shared with you in Monday's Post I want this week to be a celebration of all the fun things that make life exciting---and to a child, life is just plain exciting!

**Period!**

So for those of you who have children (or are kids at heart, like I am) then this post is for you! Once a month we are going to be doing "Pin-Tastic Tuesday" and sharing my favorite ideas I have seen for the month on whatever subject I choose! This month I chose the subject of fun things for kids to do during the summer, because it is the perfect time of year for fun ideas! There are so many wonderful and fun ideas over there, that I know I will never accomplish them all, but all the same,
some are fun and easy
and that is what we are going for today!
By the way, if you haven't joined my page on Pinterest, be sure to bop on over there by clicking the Pinterest ribbon over my picture!

The first idea that my kids are RAVING ABOUT, uses recycling at its finest for family entertainment! The blog Housing a Forest has amazing, simple, and fun ideas for kids that are also frugal, so be sure to browse around while you are over there! The idea my oldest and youngest are telling everyone about is called Rainbow Bubble Snakes:

click here to head over there
The Welcoming House Clan are really good about going BIG on things, so you can imagine that I was not very surprised at all when the bottle that my Big Kid wanted to use to make this was a 2-liter soda bottle! LOL! And you know what, it was amazingly fun! This is seriously something we are going to be doing all summer long around here.

What fun would something like a 2-liter soda bottle Bubble
wand be without a
giant bubble recipe
you can make for pennies compared to buying a bottle of bubbles???

This stuff works amazingly well. We actually tried it without leaving it to sit for an hour, and it just didnt do the job. However, let it sit, and seriously......that stuff makes me think that all those cartoons of someone floating away in a bubble might ACTUALLY be possible, because they last so long and are so strong! We will have to try them here in January when it is 30 below, and you can blow bubbles out your window to see them fall and shatter on the ground. Wouldnt it be cool if they bounced? Ah, the heart of a child sure can be fun!

Or how about a fun activity for those older kids who love to make things that are marked as their VERY OWN??
My Big Kid, who is 12, loved the idea of these mugs and how easy it was to make them. There are so many places that sell cheap mugs, like dollar stores, or big name stores, that for a couple bucks, and a package of colored sharpies, everyone can have their own special and fun mug. This is a really neat website as well, with lots of cool ideas for the crafty-spirited person or child! It requires sharpies, a blank mug, and a microwave.....while her tutorial shows using it for a wedding, kids dont need much of anything to go crazy and do their own thing......except for a parent to make sure the toddlers are using the sharpies to color on the walls, or the cat, or each other. Seriously. It happens.

click here for the fun link and let your imagination go wild!

OK, now for parental and child interaction ideas that will leave an awful lot of parents wondering how they can incorporate this into their wardrobe. This next idea is wayyyyyy too much fun, especially for those creative-at-heart kids who love to do things on their own. We love to make our own shirts around here, and while some are a little more involved than others, this one can totally be done in the backyard with empty ice cream buckets, a little parental oversight, Elmer's glue bottles, all of which means the mess is not in the house. Great for a summer day! She did a neat idea (saying she was not creative--ha!) by choosing her favorite poem (or song, I cant remember), and writing the words out in just plain handscript on her shirt before following the steps. I am thinking letting those kids draw crazy pictures, trace their hands, doodle all over the shirt, write a family saying or motto (ours was always: "We never say QUIT" as a kid--I really should ask about where that came from. We always have interesting stories behind things....crazy stories I should say! LOL). I thought it would be cool to even do my favorite psalm on there, but put my name in where it says YOU or CHILD, you know.....
So seriously, head on over and check this one out!

click here to head over there are check this awesome idea out!

Ok, while we are talking about t-shirts, and sharpies, this is one seriously fabulous idea that can also be done outside on a picnic table, and ends up amazingly fun and cute---check this post out! You can find large sparkly iron-ons at just about any fabric or craft store, but if you want something that is just inexpensive, then find a shirt that already has something like this on at a thrift store and go to town. Also, while the pic shows a very girly top (which of COURSE appeals to the mom of three adorable girls) I can totally see some boys rockin' this idea with greens and blues and browns. And it is so EASY to do........I see a whole plethora (there's my word again) of opportunities and outfits coming up for the Welcoming House Girls in the next year with this one---headbands....bags....perhaps shoes? Oh yes!

only a few ingredients for a summertime tee that stands out! Check it out!

And what fun would summer be without being able to make a fun treat to sugar your kids up and send them whizzing around the yard? This recipe is simple, easy and so fun even a small child can do it with a little help! I dont often give my kids this kind of treat, so they would really be excited to see something like this show up on a picnic table --what fun would this idea be for a summer picnic with kids? Check it out!

Homemade Pixie sticks?? YES PLEASE! Click here for the fabulous blog idea!

I could have posted about a zillion more, but the truth is, sometimes a girl only has so much time to look, and a lot less time to do---so I wanted to share ones my kids have or will be doing this summer. I promise, I will post pics for you to see when we get it done! Wouldn't that be an awesome Almost Wordless Wednesday post! :)
Hope you had fun on this young at heart, kid-centered Pin-Tastic Tuesday! Be sure to let me know which simple and fun idea(s) you tried! Be sure and check back tomorrow for my end-of-June picture post. :)

Many Blessings to you and yours,
Heather

Meal Plan Monday---5 Simply Satisfying Summer Desserts

In honor of my birthday this last weekend, a day I seriously enjoy as I am SO thankful that I am here and so blessed with so many things--health, family, friends, a home, food, rabbits, the ability to garden, the country I live in, etc-- I decided this week we are going ALL OUT and having some fun. SO--if you are looking for regular, run-of-the-mill food recipes for dinner or lunch, or even snacks....
SORRY.

This week is going to be all about the things in life that give us that delight to be alive , just like a child, and help smooth out the rough edges on those tough days and years.

I have been seeing SO MANY fantastic desserts all over Facebook and Pinterest, and other amazing sites, that I just had to devote today to showcasing some of them. Many are from times gone by, and are so simple to make that once you see the process you will wonder why you have not used these recipes before.
And for the dear reader who alluded to the fact I am solely responsible for the expansion of her derriere.....I love you and am glad you get so much out of my blog posts! :)
 And one more thing.

Dont shoot the messenger. :)

Are you ready?
Here we go!

In most parts of the country berries are coming in like crazy! Strawberries, Raspberries, Blackberries, Mulberries, etc etc etc. The first dessert uses berries, pound cake cubes, and homemade custard (or store bought yogurt) in layers to make a beautiful and MOST DELICIOUS warm weather dessert!
Feast your eyes on a gorgeous Raspberry Trifle Dessert:

The recipe is ridiculously easy---you start with cubes of cake (it is easiest to simply make a 9X13 pan of cake and freeze it as it cubes much easier---plus then it is cold, which is a bonus in the summer heat), fresh washed berries, and your choice of yogurt or custard. Start with the cake, then a layer of berries, then a layer of yogurt. Keep going until your bowl is filled, and decorate with mint leaves or just with fresh sugared berries. Impressive and tastes amazing, so you will love it! Here is another fantastic option that uses chocolate cake instead of pound cake or regular cake: click right here

My second idea is not for the faint of heart....or for anyone who has a hard time resisting the combination of Peanut Butter and Chocolate. This one is a relatively new idea on our table, but it is so incredibly simple to make that I couldn't resist adding this to the summer dessert list.

Feast your eyes on the Chocolate-PB Refrigerator Cake:

Yep.
3 ingredients.
And the longer it sits the easier it is to cut.
So make it up the night before and serve it for dinner the following evening.
Click on the link below the pic to go straight to the recipe.

Since earlier this week was National Peaches and Cream Day, and one of my very favorite pages on FB posted this simple but AMAZING recipe for  Peaches and Cream Pops, I knew I had to share it with my lovely readers. So easy, and SO delicious. Ours were gone within a couple hours, as the color is SO appealing to children, and seriously, I only have 8 popsicle molds. And three children.
Do the math. :)

http://www.facebook.com/SweetHeatChefs
 Peaches and Cream Pops

Ingredients
1/2 cup peeled, chopped fresh California peaches
1/3 cup peeled, pureed fresh California peaches
2/3 cup vanilla yogurt
Preparation
Lightly swirl all ingredients together in small bowl.
* Spoon into 4 Popsicle molds and insert handle. Freeze at least 4 hours.
Preparation Time
10 minutes

Chill Time
Freeze time: At least 4 hours
Makes 4 pops

*For extra sweet pops, add 1 to 2 tablespoons of honey to yogurt before swirling.

My fourth Simply Satisfying idea is a simple Fruit Pizza.
Just the colors on this are so refreshing and beautiful, arent they?
A simple shortbread crust, sweetened cream cheese,
 and sliced fruit make for
a gorgeous dessert that anyone would be proud to serve their company.
Now, in our house it would never look like that because everyone would insist on helping, and I would be hard-pressed to make sure that the sliced fruit actually went ON the crust,
but for those of you in a different stage of life,
this is a beautiful, simple, cool summer idea.
Click on the link below the picture to be taken to the totally awesome site that came up with this idea and took pictures of it.

http://pinchofyum.com/fruit-pizza

Finally, what summer dessert buffet would be complete without an amazing recipe and picture of simple No-Bake Cheesecake?
I have used this recipe for many years, and top it with berries, or chocolate and PB cups,
pecans and caramel sauce...the varieties are endless.
The link below takes you straight to Martha Stewart's simple recipe on her site, which is almost like eating a treat because there are so many beautiful things there for those of us who love simple, classic beauty!

http://www.marthastewart.com/858246/no-bake-cheesecake

I hope this inspires you to choose one and serve it up to the family later today. All of these take only a few minutes to make, and just time to sit and chill. Some are as simple as making a batch of Jello, while that is something kids love, often can be something that gets old for adults who like an occasional dessert with a meal.

I hope you have a wonderful Monday, and be sure to check back tomorrow as we are going to be having our very first Too-Much-Fun Tuesday, with great ideas and fun recipes for those kids and grandkids in your life!

Many Blessings to you and yours,
Heather

Man Cave Monday: I promised..........Baking Bread Outside

Do you see this man?

Yes. You are laying eyes on the Handy Hubby who is forever immortalized in my blog posts about all the happenings around the Welcoming House.
Give him a project, and he can do it. In short order. And it is always well done, thought through, and even if he has NO EXPERIENCE making it, he will figure it out, and,
in his own words: "Get 'er done".
Let me show you just one single project that he has been working on around the home today.
(Yes that means there are more but this is the only one I took a picture of)

That set of rabbit cages on the left.
He made them.
Today.
All of it.
He made the cages from scratch.
He made the frame from lumber he planned, bought and/or used
from our scrap pile from other projects.
Each cage is separate, and can be removed if we need
to transport the rabbits somewhere.
Ingenious.
And well-built.

But that is not what I am most excited about today.
It is this.

Before you begin to think we are rednecks.....
.just know this little wood stove is a tangible sign of love
from that Handy Hubby to his adorable, and oh-so-busy wife.

He loves my homemade bread, and with the crazy hot weather around here,
I have not been baking because I don't want to heat up the house.
We do not have central air yet, just window air conditioners,
so in an effort to save money and energy, I have been doing whatever it took
to make things stay nice for the four of us who are home all day in the heat.

When he finally asked why we had to buy bread, the very next morning he was outside with our "adopted son", Cale, and they were tinkering with the small wood stove he normally uses in the Man Cave every fall and winter to keep that space cozy and warm.
Next thing I know they are leading me outside, and this is what I see.
THEY didnt know they could,
or even IF it would work,
but we put a batch of bread on to rise, and this is the result, in pictures.

Take one warmed up stove that has been rigged up to run un-attached to a furnace...

Make sure you have a grate to set the bread pans on--kinda important not to overlook this part, and then have a hot oven, but no way to bake anything in it.......

Gotta check the bread with a flashlight since its gotten dark outside. Sounds hollow when thumped, so it must be done.

Voila. Absolutely perfect bread. No ashes on it (perfect draft). Lovely brown crispy crust. I let the men try it first since they worked so hard, and we all gave it a thumbs up.
About a million times.
So for the rest of the summer, we can bake bread, as usual,
twice a week, and never heat up the house.

So........ you think it will do brownies? LOL

Happy Monday Morning to you all
and many blessings to you and yours,

Heather
