Three Bottles.
One large, one medium, and one small,
and they are the heavy hitters in our medicine cabinet.
and they are the heavy hitters in our medicine cabinet.
No kidding.
My children ask for them.
My husband expects them.
I make tons of items for our household from them.
And people who dont know us, or what we do,
or how we live our lives,
will most likely think we are crazy.
You see, we are a culture that is always looking for the next quick fix. If we get sick, even sniffles, many run to the doctor. If our child wakes up complaining of an earache, it is straight to the clinic on the corner or the ER, no matter how expensive it is.
And a lot of it has to do with how often we are fed this mantra that we are incapable, uneducated, or simple unable to help
or heal ourselves.
or heal ourselves.
The pharmaceutical industry thrives on that lie.
To to the tune of billions of dollars per year.
Now, quick disclaimer, I want you to understand I absolutely believe that modern medicine has a place. Totally. There have been fantabulous breakthroughs, miracle medicines, excellent pediatric advances (I would not have any of my children without such things.). I also have very good friends who are doctors, and I love them and appreciate all that they do.
But we have become so disconnected from anything to help ourselves in our society, coming to distrust so many of the things that our mothers and grandmothers, and even beyond that, considered common and everyday things, that it really is incredibly sad. That was a huge reason behind me writing my book,Growing Your Own medicine, because I realized with just a little bit of knowledge, and someone walking people through it, we COULD become more educated and confident about treating so many little things at home on our own.....
So now, lets talk about those three Bottles.
Lavender.
Tea Tree Oil.
Eucalyptus.
Those three are the mainstays in my medicinal approach with oils,
and I have researched the heck out of them for the last couple years.
Lavender and coconut oil is what I use to rub my children down at night after a bath. Not only does it promote healthy sleep cycles, but it heals and protects bug bitten skin during the summer, and dry spots during the winter. I suffer from sometimes severe bouts of insomnia due to my fibromyalgia. Lavender is the first bottle of anything I reach for. After over 18 months of trying every sleeping pill known to my doctor, and 3 years previous to that struggling to find out why a healthy 25 year old woman was suddenly unable to function normally in a physical environment, I am so thankful for a simple sleep aid that can help. When my husband is down with a bad headache due to his work, or all the hard work that he has done around the house for the day, the Lavender is right by my side, easing his pain due to its pain lowering capabilities.
And that is just ONE of the bottles that waits for me in the medicine cabinet.
Tea Tree oil is my go to oil for when my oldest daughter's immune system wreaks havoc inside her mouth and she is suffering from canker sores that make her miserable.
It is first on bug bites, and first into my cleaning products for the bathroom.
Owies immediately get presented for the "owie oil" from my 3 year olds, because they know that it will heal faster, and hurt less if we use it.
And finally, the solution I wipe out nasal congestion and head colds with through my neti pot uses a couple drops of Tea Tree oil in it every winter and Spring. As an antiseptic and natural antibiotic, it fulfills its duties admirably every time.
Finally is the Eucalyptus oil sitting there waiting for the cold weather to hit. I make my Cold Salve (think Vick's Vaporub) every fall knowing in a couple months it will get used up and I will need to make it again. When my kids get really sick, I move past the rub and go straight to the little body, using coconut oil, or olive oil and treating their backs, feet and chest. It is a very tough cold that can withstand the onslaught that the Eucalyptus oil brings onto it. I am careful with this one on my children as I know a little goes a long way.
I would have a whole cupboard full of essential oils, because I have seen how amazingly they work, and how powerful they can be in treating our everyday maladies. Someone has an earache? I combine garlic, and olive oil, and when it has heated, and cooled, I add a couple drops of tea tree to it. Put that into the ear, and then rub lavender oil around the back with a little more olive oil. Combine those with a touch of ear massage and my kiddos have soared through toddlerhood with no long-lasting ear infections. I am so thankful for the friends that have taught me this way of doing things, taken the time to reach out and teach me how to use simple essential oils to treat common things in my family.
And they are very very effective.
However, the quality can be all over the charts depending on what the brand is, and that is something you need to know.
So I am proud to share with you that tomorrow we are going to be sitting down and talking with my friend Amanda, who is a Young Living Consultant. She is going to be running an amazing giveaway this weekend for someone very lucky to win, and talking to us tomorrow about her favorite oils and how she uses them with her (amazing) family! I can not tell you how incredibly excited I am to share this Friday and weekend giveaway with you, because I know that someone, somewhere, is in the same place I was a couple years ago without knowing much about how to treat your family easily and safely using essential oils.
See you back here tomorrow!
Blessings to you and yours,
~Heather
I look forward to hearing more about oils.
ReplyDeleteLooks very interesting!
Wow! That's amazing. I'd love to know how you make each of those treatments with it (like amounts and such). We used an oil from a friend a few months back for my little girl's ear infection and it was awesome!
ReplyDeleteI suffer chronic pain that gives me many sleepless nights. I will be giving the lavender a go. I have been using the tea tree oil for years in place of store bought antibacterial ointment. It just plain works better. Thank you for the great column.
ReplyDeleteI love how you make everything yourself. The lavender and coconut oil sounds GLORIOUS! My sister in law has fibromyalgia and I know how hard that can be, so I am so glad it works for you. She struggles with insomnia as well.
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing at the HomeAcre Hop!
ReplyDeleteHope you join us again on Thursday :)
